Reginald Marshall was born on 7th March 1913 (Newmarket Q2-1913 3B:877), son of George Frederick and Alice Maud MARSHALL(née RUFFLES ). In Cambridge Q1-1940 he married Olive Mary BARRETT. Before mobilisation he was a stallion man. In the 1939 register Olive BARRETT was at 4 Ley Road, Stetchworth with Reginald's parents. George Marshall [3-12-1883] a postman and Special Constable; Alice M [23-10-1888], and Reginald's sister Phyllis M [6-12-1921]. There are no closed records. |

Captured as Singapore fell to the Japanese, the 2nd battalion had been trying to hold Batu Pahat on the mainland, but on 24/25 January 1942 were forced to gradually withdraw down to Singapore Island. Reginald was lost in one of the infamous "Hellships" transporting allied prisoners to the Japanese mainland On 21st September 1944 the Hofuku Maru [KA-27] sailed with Convoy MATA-27 for Takao in Formosa. She was attacked by an American aircraft carrier about 80 miles north of Corregidor, the aircraft carrier’s planes sunk the whole fleet including the Hofuku Maru, not knowing she carried prisoners locked in the holds. The Hofuku Maru was carrying 1289 prisoners from Manila to Japan, 1047 were lost. |
